Satara Region Development Plan — key details

The Satara Regional Plan covers Satara district in south-western Maharashtra, prepared under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966 and administered by the District Planning Office at Satara in coordination with the Town Planning and Valuation Department of Maharashtra State. The constituent urban local bodies for Satara, Karad, Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani and Wai act as local planning authorities within their respective jurisdictions.

A separate Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani Regional Plan was first sanctioned by the Government of Maharashtra in 1985 (with a plan period of 1984-2001), and was subsequently revised (covering 2002-2024). The hill-station precinct is also designated as an Eco-Sensitive Zone under the Environment Protection Act and is now overlaid by the New Mahabaleshwar Special Planning Authority (MSRDC) for the broader hill-area project.

Satara district sits on the eastern edge of the Western Ghats and hosts industrial nodes at Karad and Satara MIDC, agricultural belts along the Krishna and Koyna rivers, and the Koyna Dam — one of India’s largest hydroelectric installations. The DP overlay on this page reflects the published regional, municipal and Eco-Sensitive Zone boundaries georeferenced over satellite imagery.
