The Sangli / Sangli-Miraj Development Plan is administered by the Sangli, Miraj and Kupwad City Municipal Corporation (SMKC), which was constituted on 9 February 1998 by merging the erstwhile Sangli, Miraj and Kupwad municipal councils. The Development Plan for the original Sangli town was sanctioned by the State Government on 28 March 1977 and came into force on 1 June 1977 under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966.
Sangli is a major agricultural-trade and educational centre in south-western Maharashtra, historically renowned as the principal turmeric-trading market of India — the Sangli turmeric APMC is one of the largest in the country — and as a centre for sugar processing, jaggery, grape and raisin trading. The Miraj sub-centre is a major rail junction on the Central Railway / South Central Railway interface and an important regional healthcare cluster.
