Kolhapur Development Plan — key details
The Kolhapur Development Plan is administered by the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC). The Development Plan for the City of Kolhapur was sanctioned by the State Government on 18 December 1999 under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966.
A separate Kolhapur Urban Area Development Authority (KUADA) was constituted in 2017 — vide Government Notification No. TPS-2117/24/C.R.96/17/UD-13 dated 16 August 2017 — under sections 42(A) to 42(G) of the MRTP Act, to act as the Planning Authority for 42 villages surrounding Kolhapur Municipal Corporation. KUADA’s mandate is to secure well-planned peripheral development around the KMC core.
Kolhapur is a major industrial and trading city in south-western Maharashtra, historically a princely state and home to the Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) temple — one of the principal Shakti Peethas. Industrial activity centres on the Kolhapur, Shiroli, Kagal and Gokul-Shirgaon MIDC industrial estates, with engineering, foundry, textile, dairy and sugar industries as the major sectors.
