The Akola Development Plan is administered by the Akola Municipal Corporation (AMC), the principal civic body for Akola in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region. The Municipal Corporation governs an area of approximately 124 square kilometres and operates under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966.
Akola sits at the centre of the cotton-growing belt of western Vidarbha, and is historically a major cotton-trading and ginning centre. The city is connected to Mumbai, Nagpur and other Vidarbha cities by the Mumbai-Howrah trunk railway line — one of the busiest broad-gauge corridors in India — and by national highways linking the Vidarbha sub-region with Marathwada and the Konkan. Industrial activity in and around Akola includes cotton ginning and pressing, edible-oil milling, dal milling and a handful of textile units.
