The Nandurbar Regional / Development Plan is administered under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, with an approved regional plan in force — referenced on the Directorate of Town Planning & Valuation, Maharashtra State as the Development Plan for Nandurbar (Revised Partly) under Section 31(1) of the MRTP Act. The District Branch Office for Town Planning at Nandurbar (Assistant Director of Town Planning) administers the plan in coordination with the constituent municipal councils.
Nandurbar district was carved out of Dhule district on 1 July 1998 and lies in the tribal belt of north-western Maharashtra, bordering Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The district has the highest proportion of Scheduled Tribe population in Maharashtra and is dominated by hilly terrain, the Satpura range and the Narmada river basin in its northern reaches. The town of Nandurbar itself is a regional trading and administrative centre, with cotton, soybean and forest produce as the principal economic drivers.
