A major production centre for cotton textiles and artistic silk fabrics, the city is home to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University and hosts the Aurangabad Industrial City smart city project. Aurangabad city forms the administrative and commercial hub of the district and region. The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (officially Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Mahanagarpalika) was established in 1936 and elevated to Municipal Corporation status on 8 December 1982. It now encompasses 138.5 square kilometres and is divided into 115 electoral wards. A revised Draft Development Plan covering 2022–2042 was submitted to the corporation and state government on 7 August 2024, providing the authoritative framework for land use, zone designations and planning constraints across the city and its fringe areas.
